ORGAN DONATION IS ANONYMOUS, FREE OF CHARGE AND UNCONDITIONNED

Thursday, September 28, 2017

Dear Friends,

Regardless of the presence or absence of a donation card, the Lebanese law leaves the final decision about organ donation to your family. They have to document their approval by signing an official document countersigned by 2 first-degree relatives.

ORGAN DONATION IS ANONYMOUS, FREE OF CHARGE AND UNCONDITIONED. It is an independent decision that can be revoked at any time.

NOD-Lb is an official organization designated by the Lebanese law of Ethics to supervise all organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Lebanon.

NO HOSPITAL CAN RETRIEVE ORGANS WITHOUT THE APPROVAL OF NOD-LB. The donor registry (the registry of those who have signed a donation card) is under the supervision of NOD-Lb, it is computerized and the data are strictly CONFIDENTIAL. Even after donation, the names of the donors are not divulged.

We thank the applicants who have raised this issue. It has allowed us to stress again and clarify information already posted on our website. We are insisting on explaining once again the procedure because some ignorant and misinformed individuals will always pretend to know more and detain some “so-called” secrets and use them to justify their egoism and lack of humanitarian solidarity.

We can assure you that physicians at the Emergency departments or in the Intensive Care Units are not asked to procure organs. Their PRIMARY objective is to treat you and cure you. ONLY when their treatment fails, will NOD-Lb intervene. Our aim is to help people but NEVER TO HARM THEM. Modern medicine covers both direct and indirect care. Donated organs will ensure an adequate care for many desperate individuals that we do not directly know.

Filling a donation card is far less important than informing your family and friends about your will to donate and making sure that your wish will be fulfilled. This was actually the theme of our last campaign “Say it Now”.

No need to worry, we are here to help you and help those desperate patients (>600 already) that such naïve misinformation will certainly harm.

NOD Lb

Vice President
